Department of Justice Intervenes in Lawsuit to Block California's New Electoral Map

The US Justice Department have entered the fray in a lawsuit initiated by California Republicans, seeking to block the California's newly approved congressional redistricting map.

This legal action, submitted to federal court, challenges the map supported by the state's Democratic governor, which was developed in reaction against a Republican-led gerrymander in Texas.

"California's redistricting scheme constitutes a brazen power grab that violates voting rights and mocks the electoral system," declared the nation's top law enforcement official.

Democrats have voiced assurance that the new maps will withstand legal scrutiny.

"These opponents were defeated in the election and soon they will face defeat in the judicial system," stated a representative for the governor.

Constitutional Challenge

The lawsuit claims that California's map wrongfully utilized race as a factor to significantly advantage Hispanic voters in contravention of the federal constitution.

"Race cannot be used as a substitute to advance political interests, but that is precisely what the state legislature did with Proposition 50," argued a high-ranking representative from the Civil Rights Division.

Political Context

The legal battle represents the major counterpunch by the Democratic party in the ongoing redistricting war that began in Texas and has extended to various parts of the country.

Unlike other states, where Republican state legislatures have implemented partisan maps, California's plan required voter approval, which it obtained with nearly 65% of the vote.

Wider Consequences

The Democratic party need to flip just a small number of GOP-controlled House seats to gain majority of the chamber in next year's midterm election.

The party that holds the majority will influence the final years of the current administration, deciding if a GOP-controlled legislature will persist in implementing its political program or encounter opposition, congressional probes and potential additional obstacles.
